Stan's code worked.  To skip details it involved SPL and using the 
SEGMENTER and build your own little SL.

But I got what I needed out of the program, it was an error the current 
version of BACKREST wouldn't say before:

BACKPACK ERROR:  unable to reach start position on directory on tape.

(Problem solved.)
