I gave Tracy some code to (hopefully) allow him to at least run BACKREST in
a "list the tape contents" mode on his A-Class.

To actually restore files *with that version* of BACKREST on an MPE/iX
system would be a significantly difficult task ...
one that even I would not want to undertake.

Rather, I suggest:

   (using the SIMH simulator)

   - move the tape to Linux / Mac / Windows box (where you're running SIMH
HP 3000)

   - get BACKREST onto the simulated HP 3000

   - use BACKREST to restore any desired files

   - use STORE to create a STORE 'tape' (in reality, a SIMH format tape
image)

   - convert the SIMH tape image to a STORE-to-disk format

   - upload the tape image to your A-Class

   - copy the tape image (correctly!) to a real tape

   - use CM RESTORE to restore from the real tape.

Phew!

There are some shortcuts one can take. For example, if you have Rosetta,
you could take the SIMH
format tape image and use Rosetta to restore the files to a local directory
structure ... if you simply want
the 'simple' files (e.g., not KSAM files).

Better yet ... look for a tape created by a newer version of BackPack ...
it *might* have a newer
version of BACKREST that is MPE/iX compatible.
