it looks like it was the transceiver. thanks for your help on that. however now i'm unable to start network services. I get a validate warning. pathname: netxport.ni.lan1.protocol.id  no store and forward buffers configured 
also Validate error pathname;netxport.ni   IP node can't equal zero
also Validate error pathname; netxport.ni.lan.link    no ni link configured for this network
any ideas would be much appreciated.
