If you use an SSD, and whenever you use any form of SD or flash memory
(USB 'keys'), be very aware that these things are not erasable in any
meaningful sense of the word. Unlike a HDD one cannot overwrite
previously used sections of flash memory with any degree of certainty.
Leaving aside the fact that, short of degaussing, such is not
entirely possible on most modern high capacity HHDs either.
If you are going to put sensitive data on these things then those
files have to be encrypted BEFORE they hit the media or the media
itself must be encrypted a la Apple's FileVault before anything of
significance is transferred to them. Yes, this means that smartphone
factory resets are more of an inconvenience than an obstacle to anyone
that really wants your data. Your phones need to be encrypted from
the very beginning as well. That is what the latest version of IOS
impose on iPhone and iPad users and for this very reason.
Also, consider that the only safe form of disposal of flash memory,
including your smartphones, is complete physical destruction. DOD
disposal protocols require subsequent incineration of the remains so
you can figure out just how persistent data residue is on these
things.
But SSDs do make things 'fly'.
