Tom,

Here's a link to Primer from IBM (Cognos) that has syntax examples.

IBM calls it a 4GL and they still hold a little sway in our industry.

Terry

Roy,

Without any trace or hint in your writings of a Grammar for a so-called '4GL' you therefore remain in the growing list of gurus, experts and geeks who cannot produce one also.

Since you enjoy Wikipedia, I'm sure you'll have read this article:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programming_language

Pay attention to the paragraphs on Syntax and Semantics and you'll find a simple Grammar for LISP.

In an earlier post I provided a link to a COBOL Grammar.

If you're stuck, here's a Grammar for an ASSEMBLY Language:

http://dsearls.org/courses/C391OrgSys/SimHelp/HTML/Assembly_Language_Format.htm

And one for FORTRAN can be found here:

http://slps.github.io/zoo/fortran/derricks.html

And don't forget ALGOL here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Wijngaarden_grammar

I can find a grammar for any 3GL but the elusive so-called '4GL' is like the Yeti.

Aristotle said that "One swallow does not a summer make..." but it appears that his message never got through to a lot of people: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/one_swallow_does_not_a_summer_make

Your writings are very interesting, but do not show any substance when it comes to the "Wikipedia TurboImage article". They also have no relevance to the price of cabbages or the location of Pluto for that matter.

Please concentrate on the article by Terry O'Brien and its reference to "Fourth-generation programming language". I'd be delighted to find a Grammar for one.

Kindest Regards,

Tom.
