Our free "ONLINE" utility, at http://www.allegro.com/?page_id=77#ONLINE
may be of some use.

It will request a tape drive to go online, and wait until it's ready (or until 
a timeout of about 2 minutes ... some DLT drives don't properly signal that they're
online, unfortunately).
