Doing a regular store, I get the same error on both drives:

SPECIFICALLY, STORE RECEIVED ERROR -44 FROM THE IO SYSTEM (S/R 1557)

I did re-seat the SCSI cables, as suggested by many.  I don't think it is
SCSI related because the drives are acting strangely.

I think they have not been used in so long, and are so old, they need to be
replaced.
