It would have to be a new function. You could not change the output of the current function.

That is actually a method that has been suggested several times. I would change it to be the same as the Unix epoch, January 1, 1970. I could never understand why 1900 was chosen which meant that over half of its range was past already.

Or, change the 'base year' from 1900 to something around 1950.

Not that I am aware.

As near as I can remember, the problem is in having 16 bits to store the
date: 7 leftmost bits for the year, offset from 1900 and 9 bits to store the day of the year. Those 7 bits only allow for 127 years, so 2027 is it.

One option is to change the year to have 511 days to use up all 9 bits on the right and thus push the problem back about 24 years if we change this coming year. We can always go back in time and change the length of the year earlier, and thus get about 40% more days for each year.

The other option is to limit the number of days in a year to 255 and thus get 255 years instead of 127, albeit shorter ones. But we would get about 8 times as many days using this method as opposed to longer years but only 15 years to go. I'm not too sure if the wayback machine is all that dependable these days.

The problem with altering the format of those 16 bits is the sheer volume of application and store data that relies on it now.

Denys

At one time where was talk about a 'patch' to push that date further into the future.
Has anyone pursued that effort?
