Thanks, I wasn't aware of that little detail.

I'm not sure what you mean by native mode....

When network-based printing first showed up on mpe, essentially all that it could do is talk to pcl-knowledgeable printers (after all -- it's all hp).

But both mpe and printers have evolved. Most printers now (including hp's) don't talk pcl...and so in response mpe printing is more tolerant.

An easy check of the archives will show that the standard recommendation is to turn off pjl and snmp (on the mpe side) and things will generally merrily
print. - d

Subject: [HP3000-L] HP JetDirect vs. Spooler - Why is the Sky Blue?

Whenever I get a non-HP printer, in order to get it to print in Native mode, I have always been told I need to attach it to a JetDirect box.

Aside from HP control of the Native Mode Spooler, why is this so? Why does this have to be? This has never been explained to me.

I'm sure the answer is simple. If anyone has a dissertation they'd like to send me that would be great.
