I dabbled with Avast at home for a while, then went to MSE. Ok so far. And
it doesn't nag you to upgrade to the paid version.
But I think the best protection is the paid suites, largely because of
compatibility issues (with Avast running, installation of the free firewall
I wanted to use would hang part-way thru).
Paid suites can be cheaper than you think. Often Amazon will ship you a
disk for *MUCH* less than the digital download from the software company....
pause for research..... As I write this, Kaspersky internet security 3-seat
is 79.95 download, but Amazon phyical disks are $71.99 for the 2012 version
and just 27.39 for the 2011 version. But the both disk come with licences
that are supposed to be good for a year of whatever is the current version.
Order the 2011 disk, download the free trial of 2012, feed it the license
key off the disk, and you should be good to go. No need for the disk to
ever see the inside of a drive.
Kaspersky Pure is 89.95 download and $40.69 from Amazon. That's still the
current version -- and what I am testing out for work.
Macafee 2011 3 user is $9.79. Trend Micro Titanium 3 user is $18.99. Etc.
Pick a brand.
