Different subnets of the same network.
 
OS is 7.5, unknown patch condition.
 
Don't know anything about TCP timers.
 
Didn't run NETTOOL.
 
As I mentioned, we FTP from/to the HP3000 all the time - even to/from the same subnet this box is on - with no problems whatsoever.
 
I'm going to try some of the other suggestions first....
