John,
I have a client with the same problem, with a background job responsible
for printing. Various Application functions would write key info to a
msg file, and then the background job would instantly read the record,
and print the related data. Works great until there is a power failure,
which happens all the time. This particular company has refused to
implement the UPS and power filter that I have recommended. So they call
me every now and again with this printer problem, and I charge them for
my time. However I fixed this nuisance by adding a purge/build to the
backgroud job. They never call me with this problem anymore, this
company is also in Houston, and so am I.
Have you every tried the 'strings' command on a LOG####.PUB.SYS file?
Combined with 'grep' you can search logfiles, add a little 'awk' and
create a new system log report.
It may help you see what happens at boot time, depending on the system
config.

Whenever the system goes down unexpectedly, as in power losses outside UPS capacity, these files can be left damaged and don't work properly. The writing process doesn't get any errors, but the readers don't get any data.

On reading up on sysstart commands, it seems there are only a few commands that are legal, and PURGE isn't one them....Does this seem consistent with people's observations ?
