See them a lot, unfortunately, John.

Either bad media, but equally as likely the drive is going/has gone south.

You might try a new tape to see if it persists.  If so, you can try cleaning the drive and give it another shot.

The good news is, if you have to replace the unit, reconditioned (which is all you're likely to find in the the C1533/C1537s) units aren't very costly and are a snap to put in.
