This sounds to me like your router may be configured to send "redirects".
When the router thinks that there is a better route for a network
device(server) to reach its destination, it can send redirects. Sometimes
you get a lot of these (one for every packet) and you will see a message on
the console "Gateway redirects severe".

Subject: [HP3000-L] Deleted Gateway reappears in GATELIST and in ROUTING

Hello and Thanks:

The default gateway address was changed in NMMGR, and it validated
successfully and works for about 5 minutes, whereby the original default
gateway shows up again in GATELIST (although just as another gateway, not
the default), and the new gateway routing stops working. Also, the routing
table in NETTOOL shows only the old gateway, not the new one. Any idea how
to get this successfully reconfigured?

Thanks,
John
