And there was another little box/gizmo that converted the older
7920/7925 disc drives for use on the Series III-R. Those drives weren't
HP-IB, forgot the interface "name" for them but they had a big control
cable and a little data cable. The controls were daisy-chained and the
data cables all ran back to the controller (?).
The III-R didn't have the native interface card in the system chassis,
but rather you could get the controller box (about 4-5Us worth) mounted
in the bottom of one of the 792x drives.
We had a handful of Series-IIs and Series-IIIs, one of which was
converted/upgraded to a "III-R" (or else we just kept the old drives,
it's been a long time), and I remember having to mount/cable that box in
the bottom.
And let's not forget the 7980's SCSI adapter, which although later in
time, was another protocol-converter-in-a-box.
