Tracy,
Thanks for the suggestion .. That is what I told one of the CVS guys
here on site last night after about 1 hour or trying to run this down.
No, I know that these Ethernet cards can be flaky, but the ones in the
the printers here are OK. I put the network assigned IP addresses
(which seem to be consistent no matter what I do) into NPCONFIG and I
can use the printers, however since the IP addresses are being assigned,
instead of the ones that I put in there, I can't rely on those remaining
the same and then printing would stop working.
I have been working with these things since 2000, when HP first released
them I even went back and re-read all the emails exchanges that I had
with Paul Withers who was the LineJet expert for HP, but could not find
too much wisdom.
At least it reminded me of using Telnet to look at the configs.

If you are using the NIC that comes with the LQ500, you may have got a
flaky one.
If it is a bad one, it will reset at the slightest hiccup.
In such a case, better to switch to the parallel port and use an
external JetDirect box.
If you go this route you'll find when you take off the printer cover
they just hooked up a Centronix female plug onto a little NIC. Just
unplug the Centronix cable and thread it through the alternate hole.
