Been running it on 4 computers at home for years...
No issues unless you have some intense computer application you are running.
Always runs in the background with a low priority, which installs as default.
If you are running something CPU intense, you can always pause the program.
By the way, a few year or so ago, they changed the name to BOINC Manager.
What I miss most from the change was the cool screen saver.
