sFTP is still FTP, though as pointed out it uses a different port and
some overhead to encrypt/secure the data transferred.  (primarily so the
password doesn't get revealed)

I believe HP had a PC-based program that "understands" DS, though it
isn't clear from the original message whether or not the original
"server" is/was a PC or some other system (unix/linux? Mac?)

even more primitive, but gaining in popularity lately is "mq" (or
mqueue) -- think "HP message files on ANTI-steroids" ;)  (or rather,
HP's message files are mq's on steroids, but nobody ever knew/realized
that...) and yes, there is a queue-client for the HP [willow, I believe]

probably what the other company is thinking when they say "you can still
 import and export files, just don't use FTP" -- if they are stopping
the use of "FTP" because of (presumed) security inadequacies, I don't
know what they expect to gain by using SMB...
