Brian,
I am sure a lot of people are "confused" about the "license" terminology.
Since HP doesn't make "HP3000" anymore, I doubt they are interested in helping anyone understand the terminology either.
Rumor has it they still support it. And in fact you can ask for and get a quote for support. However, without a license, "RTU", right to use, HP is not allowed to add it to a support contract.
As with the Catholic church, if you pay a lot of money HP will do just about anything you ask. One of them being give you an RTU.
