Hmmm.... so, to trade in my 2001 prius for a 2008 prius [seems they are not available for 2009], gas would have to cost $500 a gallon before the "break even" point becomes anything reasonable...

admittedly, they are only claiming 47mpg for the "new" prius, and estimating 42 for my "old" prius, [which just turned over 100,000 miles last month] but in all my driving, I haven't seen an "average" that low in a long time -- my average reading hovers around 45 per, but has been down to 43 this summer as I'm actually using the A/C now and then. At $5/gallon, the estimate is 3,692 months...

Gas prices have been so much higher in Europe than in North America for a
long time (probably forever). The alternative that most European's chose was
to design, build, and buy much smaller and more fuel efficient cars than
typically used in North America.

On another note, here's a gas guzzler calculator that tells you how long it
will take you to break even by trading in your gas guzzler for a more fuel
efficient car.

(I sold in my gas guzzling VW Rabbit for $1 and bought a $150 bicycle about
15 years ago. I figure I paid it off in a month or two based on 1993 gas
prices. :-)
