The New York Times, yes the mainstream media, had a very good article on
this very topic and the difference between free speech in the USA and Europe.

It's consistent with my own observations, being from the USA and having
immigrated to Europe. Free speech is not necessarily eroding in Europe
compared to what it once was, but it's never been same as in the USA. 

For example, recently in Spain a satire magazine (Jueves) was censored and
confiscated in all news stands because it was deemed insulting to the Prince
and Princess.
