The ones over here in the Fine Arts Center have been covered up with
newspaper ever since installation was complete. I am not making this up. I
guess instead of the old "In case of fire, break glass", we now have "In
case of fire, read the funny pages"!

I'm sure all of us appreciate the deep irony in a fire alarm causing...a
fire alarm. However, it's certainly good to know that the new system is
operating the way a fire alarm is designed to function, whatever the smoky
source.

Unfortunately there was a problem with the demolition of old fire alarm
devices in Brock Hall today. The contractor attempted to remove an old
device without disconnecting the power, and that caused momentary smoke.
The new fire alarm system went into general building alarm upon sensing
smoke, which is just what it's supposed to do. I'm still checking on
what caused the brief announcement feature that happened at 12:15.

I apologize for the disruption. The contractor has been reminded once
again to take extreme care in their work.

As Dr. Rice pointed out, the new fire alarm systems in Brock, Hunter,
and Holt, and soon Fine Arts, do have capability of general emergency
announcements. Jim Pulliam will be sending something out to the campus
on this feature soon.

Subject: [UTCSTAFF] Brock Hall Chaos

Today Brock Hall has been a circus of classes emptying, and then
students
filing back in due to what seems to be malfunctioning or testing of the
emergency alarm system. This happened first during our 9:00 classes
with an
alarm, and at 12:15 another type of alarm with a brief attention message
(no
follow-up) again disrupted classes.

First, we need to know what is going on here, and secondly, now we have
these fancy alarm systems, how about teaching us which is a fire alert
and
which one mean to barricade the classroom in case a shooter is about.

How about a Raven clarification ASAP?

Richard Rice
