This is pop music in the early 60s. "Love Me Do" came out in about Oct
1962 in England, and
I was listening to "Things We Said Today" in my summer job (behind the
bar in Butlins Clacton)
in July 1964.
Those 20 months at that time were an eternity in pop music, the
distance from the Shirelles to the Supremes,
from Brook Benton to Marvin Gaye.
In that time the Beatles released 3 albums and made a film, the Beach
Boys released 5 albums, going from "Surfin USA" to "All Summer Long". An
eternity.

There was only a year between the two songs, hardly a 'long time'.
