You can save a line by typing
:setvar mmdate rtrim(str(HPYYYYMMDD,5,2))
Works on my 969 7.0.

Now I need one more thing. HPMONTH is now set to '9'. I need '09'. Yes I
can input the leading '0' but would have to change it next month. I bet
HPDATE works the same way.
Is there a quick way to strip it out of HPYYYYMMDD ?
