The cabling issue has to do with DTE/DCE (data terminal equipment /
data communication equipment). You cannot connect DTE to DTE, nor DCE
to DCE with a straight cable because they will be both "listening" on
the same wire and "talking" on the same wire. Rather than building
your own crossover connector or cable, just buy a null modem cable (or
connector -- get a bit unwieldly when combined with gender changers
hanging off a serial port). They are cheap and good have around.

Any terminal emulator program should work, unless you need to run full
screen, or use HP terminal enhancements (i.e. Glance), then you have
far less selection without a lot of tweaking. Simple command line
console work should not be a problem.

Before you go too far, have you ascertained that it is the terminal
that has gone bad, or the HP3000 console port?

Pete
