Re:

My notes say that a 917 can have a LOT more memory than that!

The HP official max memory for a 917 was 384 MB.

However, with third party memory (denser boards and no lying marketing
restrictions) you could get up to 1.5 GB.

Note: even though my old notes say "1.5 GB max", I wanted to check that...

www.crucial.com says (*today*):

   Slots: 12 (6 banks of 2)
   Maximum Memory: 192MB
Our customers have reached a max of 768MB using six of our 128MB kits.
Although HP has not acknowledged 768MB as the official max it has
been achieved without modifying the system.

So, if someone else marketed 256 MB boards, 12 of them would give you the
1.5 GB figure my notes have. IIRC, I got the 1.5 GB number from
http://www.strategicmemory.com/

For 9x7 models that are 64 MHz or faster, they have only 10 slots for memory
instead of 12.

Question: does anyone have part numbers for Crucial, Kingston, EMC, or any
other third-party memory boards from 9x7 computers for capacities larger than
64 MB per SIMM? I can't find any in my notes.

thanks,

Stan
