As I stated in a previous posting I am in no way any kind of electrician,
electronics guru, hardware genius and so on.......

I purchased a "new" (refurbished) ST136475LW 36gb disc drive and tried
installing it only to get the same problems -- wouldn't boot up with this
drive in the box.

After discussing the problem with Jim @ Cypress Tech in Florida I brought
up the topic of the blown mini-tower (which I had disconnected from the
917LX.)

Jim asked me if I had terminated the scsi connection on the 917LX.

Huh? "Um, er, no, I don't think so." was my response.

He immediately retorted "That's why it's not working!"

So I reconnected the scsi cable to the blown mini-tower and the 917LX.

Then I restarted the box with the ST136475LW drive in it and what do you
know? -- the system rebooted ok. Ran ODE/MAPPER and the new drive was
reported by Mapper. As they say, the rest is history...

Did a reload/install, started up the system and added the new drive
via Volutil. Went into sysgen and changed the product id of the drive from the
old ST19171N to the new ST136475LW. Made a new sysgen tape.

Currently I am in the middle of doing a full system restore from my backup
tapes.

I want to give *major* kudos to Jesse Dougherty and Jim @ Cypress
Technology in Florida for all the help they gave me in solving this problem.

I guess this now qualifies me for the "Knuckleheads-R-Us" club......
