Location: Rock Point Books
Title of Event: WORKSHOP: "The perseverance of the individual within an
oppressively normalizing culture: From Achilles to House with Mike
Jaynes"

Mike Jaynes, lecturer in English and Humanities, will present his short
course entitled "The perseverance of the individual within an
oppressively normalizing culture: From Achilles to House" at Rock Point
Books on Saturday, April 7th from 10 to 11:30AM. This ninety minute
lecture and guided discussion-based course will examine the fierce
individualism in contemporary writing by authors as well as in
characters such as Tom Robbins, Hunter S. Thompson, Charles Bukowski,
Henry Miller, and Dr. House, from the hit Fox medical drama "House."
Common threads from these people and characters will be traced to their
roots in Greek mythology, specifically the titan Prometheus, the god
Hermes, and the hero Achilles. These against-the-grain mythic figures
represent elements of rebellion and individuality common to all humans.
