Andres, you are very correct. Bad video drivers have been the cause of far more BSOD and assorted crashes than all other reasons combined, and by a wide margin.

The reason I counseled Mr. Lalley to run away is that he is not very adept with hardware. If you have ever heard the story about someone calling in to support to complain that his coffee cup holder was no longer working on his PC, you probably dismissed that as just an urban legend. It isn't, Mr. Lalley was the person who called.

Just kidding. :-)

Maybe that blue screens are due to a weak memory module. Worth cleaning
contacts.
Have installed a dozen Vista setups, from Home to Ultimate, both in X32
and X64 flavors, and under Virtual Pc, with blue screens caused only by a
faluty video driver.

After upgrading it, no more problems in the last two months (it is my
main laptop).

   Just my two cents.

Denys,

It is just a test box, used as a learning tool.

The blues screens of death came after I installed a clean WinXP. Go
figure.

I didn't mind loosing programs, because there were none installed. I was
just warning the masses.

When it comes to Vista upgrades, run, run far and run fast. It is always
the case when a new OS comes out. As a stubborn IT professional, you
should know better than to do an upgrade to a new OS, right when it comes
out. Getting a new PC with Vista installed on it is one thing, upgrading
an existing PC to Vista is something else; dont do it.

    Denys and Everyone,

I have one machine running Vista and Office 2007, my comments...

Vista: not ready for prime time... I had two blue screens trying to
install it and it took about 6 hours time to complete (3 attempts were
made). If I were not a stubborn IT professional, I would have given up.
Bottom line, wait for the 1st service pack and all the preiphal drivers to
be ready (read NVIDIA).

BTW, I upgraded from XP Pro to Vista Business... the is NO upgrade
path, Vista will rename the Window directory from WINDOWS to WINDOWS.old
and do a "fresh" install.

Meaning all programs will need to be reinstalled. This is a BIG
downfall for most companies.

Oh, and the Aero glass, is a lot of marketing hype. I can use it, but
I don't see what all the fuss is about.

Office 2007: A little bit more mature, but there is still a learning
curve for the new interface.

Ahh, life on the bleeding edge.

I installed the latest version of Office software emanating from
Redmond.
To my dismay, it somehow eliminated all my mail rules and that means I
received all messages to 3000-L unfiltered, so I see that Herr Baier is
still actively supporting the terrorists.

I have since reestablished most of my rules, but I am sure I am missing a
few still.

I upgraded from Office 2003. So far, it's been a pretty good experience but
I have to get used to quite a few changes in appearance and command
selection.
