Did you install WinXP SP2 and do all the 2,700 patches since SP2?

Yes, I did a clean install with all the patches.

The main issue with Vista is the regular thing, the lack of Vista drivers for a lot of hardware; this is something about which Microsoft has no control. I should think that within a few weeks or months, most of these things will be resolved, and a quick way to do that is to visit the support site of your computer’s manufacturer and of any hardware you may have installed since you bought the computer. Let’s not forget that Vista went gold some months back and I can assure you that many new drivers have become available or have been “enhanced” since that time.

I may be on the bleeding edge in a couple of ways.

First I have an NVIDIA 680i chipset on my EVGA motherboard, with an X6800 extreme dual CPU.

Second I am running the new Nvidia 8800 video card in SLI mode, that's 1.5gb of total Video memory. Also running DirectX 10.

But it looks nice on the 30inch flat screen dell monitor... :-)

Did I mention I am doing passive water cooling?

I had to rebuild a few computers recently and I just don’t know how we used to do it in the olden days. The first thing I do when the computer first comes up is to use it to visit the support sites and download and in
stall all the patches and fixes, MS being the very first site I visit.

  Ditto here...

It’s to the point that when I buy a piece of hardware for the computers here, I usually toss the CD and just download the latest drivers from the support sites.

I agree, currently I am using beta video drivers from Nvidia... took me awhile to find them on their site. But they are more stable than the production release.
