it's easy to get spoiled on mpe...but (oh the shock!) it's still a computer. may may want to add this job to your arsenal. - d

!job utlsane,manager.sys;outclass=,5
!#------------
!# this job is designed to be run weekly but it can be
!# run at any time. most importantly, it runs buldacct
!# for the entire system. in the event of a 'uh oh',
!# buldjob1 and buldjob2 are/should be reasonably current.
!# additionally, buldjob1 & 2 are altsec'd so only
!# manager.sys can do anything with them. finally, the
!# job checks to see if sysstart lives on ldev 1 or not
!# and resets the security.
!# utlsane...for the sanity of the system manager :-)

Thanks for that link. I'll be printing that off and following it. I learned
( and re-learned ) a lot the past three days. One oddity I noticed
though. I've always done all my backups with the ;DIRECTORY
option, but not with the ;ONVS option, however, it looked like
it always stored everything. When I restored the DIRECTORY
though, it only half created the account structure. All my data
and programs are on a user volume. When I tried to restore the
data and program files, it complained that the groups did not
exist even though I could see them by running a REPORT @[log in to unmask]
I had to issue the NEWACCT ;ONVS and NEWGROUP ;ONVS
for every account and group I needed. Why did the DIRECTORY
option not restore both on the system volume set and the user
volume set. It set the account's HOMEVS to the correct volume
set, but did not create the link. Is that what the BULDACCT
created jobs will do for me now?

I hope I remember this all in five years when I need to do it again!
