I use them in "hard to reach" places as long as the bulb is exposed. I
have found that they do not last very long in enclosed fixtures. I think
they get too hot.
I did buy a 3-way for a table lamp some time ago and have been very
satisfied with it. You can't even tell it's not an incandescent.
