My wife and I bought a Phillips DVD recorder back in November at
Wal-Mart.
It will record to DVD-R and DVD-RW media (not DVD-RAM.)

You can record standard cable (it's got a tuner) with it.
You can record directly from the a/v inputs (RCA plugs) so playback from
VCR/VHS Camcorder/VHS-C Camcorder can be recorded to DVD.

It also has a mini firewire socket so you can plug in a dv camera and
record that video to DVD-R(w).

As an added feature, it will play DVD-R discs with divx encoded video as
well.
The idea is that you buy a divx encoded movie by putting in a player ID
code (provided by the hardware.) You download the custom divX encoded
movie to your pc and burn it to a DVD-R.
Place said DVD-R into the player and voila, broadband meets netflix so
to speak.
Nah, I haven't used it for that. But I do play my divx video on my TV,
which is sweet.

Price was cheap, ~$129 I think.
It's a very nice stand-alone solution but for me.
DVD-R's are cheaper than tape and way less bulky.
Easier to play on a PC too!

I bought a little convertor box a couple years ago that takes RCA,
s/video and some other formats in, and then will output various formats,
I've been hooking up all my old video cameras to it and dumping them on
to my mac laptop and using iMovie and iDVD to basically slice them up
and put chapter marks and background music on the menu and stuff. My
biggest challenge is splitting up the holidays between my families and
my in-laws to get the footage of the folks who have passed away to the
ones that want it.
