Brian, there is nothing "wrong" with the setup. However I am quizzical
about a couple of things. You say that you added the refurbished drive to
the MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET (one day I will meet the person who came up with
that name.) The only one that I can see that has been recently added is
Ldev 2 AKA member2. What makes me quizzical is the nomenclature used. I
would have thought that a new drive would be member5 or certainly greater
than what was there. Perhaps you had a hole in the series.

At any rate, the reason I see that as the newly-added drive is that there is
very little permanent space used up so far, 44,752 sectors. The goal in MPE
allocations of files in a volumeset is to have the same amount of remaining
space on all drives. Ldev 3, 4 and 5, which appear to be 9GB drives all
have about 4 megasectors of free space left, (3.9, 3.8 and 3.7 MS,
respectively.) Ldev 1, a 4GB drive is a little different because it is much
smaller and it also has transient space in use.

Ldev2 has few files on it, but in time, it will gain more used permanent
space and drives 3, 4 and 5 will not grow their permanent space until Ldev2
catches up, so to speak.

You may want to check the transient space settings for all the drives, for
some reason you only had transient space on Ldev1 until you added Ldev2.
You should have some transient space on all drives in
MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET, share the load as it were. Ldev1, the master drive
in MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET has a lot of work to do; it should not be the
only one with transient space.

Denys

Subject: [HP3000-L] 917LX Disc Drive (ST19171N) Installation Problem (?)

I just installed a "new" (refurbished) disc drive into my 917LX.

Everything apparently went fine. Added the volume via VOLUTIL (scratchvol
then newvol commands).

"Dstat ALL" shows:

dstat all
LDEV-TYPE STATUS VOLUME VOLUME SET - GEN
---------- ------- ----------------------------------
1-ST15150N MASTER MEMBER1 MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET-0
2-ST19171N MEMBER MEMBER2 MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET-0
3-ST19171N MEMBER MEMBER3 MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET-0
4-ST19171N MEMBER MEMBER4 MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET-0
5-ST19171N MEMBER MEMBER5 MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET-0

Looks just fine to me..........

So I did discfree --

What makes me very suspicious is that the perm space for this new drive is
only 44752
whereas the other ldevs are all in the millions.

I suspect I have done something wrong but not sure what........

Any ideas, comments, suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA,
Brian Donaldson.
