The IRB Committee has recently made two major modifications to the
policy. Effective December 1, 2006 applications no longer must be
routed through the Department Head and Dean. Simply send your
applications to the IRB Chair, Helen Eigenberg, Dept 3203. Students,
however, still must have the approval and signature of their faculty
advisor(s). For more information visit:

In addition, we have made modifications to the policy that affects how
faculty deal with class assignments for students. This procedure does
not include honors projects, theses, or dissertations. In some
instances, students participate in research projects in order to learn
about the process of conducting research. These projects do not meet
the definition of research as outlined in the IRB policy unless the
research is intended to contribute to the generalized body of knowledge
in the field. The new changes to the policy make it more accessible for
some types of classes that previously could not meet the criteria.
Please consult the web page to see if your course assignments apply.
We also continue to encourage electronic submission. For more
