Larry,
I have no experience using this method to prepare a patch, but would
surmise that perhaps you should be using unpackp outside the POSIX shell or
in other words from the command interpreter (:).

I'm trying to download a patch for 6.0. the patch is named NSTGDK3A i can
ftp connect to ftp.itrc.hp.com and change directories to mpe-ix_patches
and then to c.60.00. i find the file for the patch and download it in
binary format but when i unpackp the file i get errors.
here is the listf and the errors
