Robert,
   The only way I know of to force the EOF to be updated is via the
writing program (calling FCONTROL 6).  

   If you're trying to figure out if there is any data in the file,
using the ;COPY as you have is the simple solution; you could always
create a command file or UDC which uses this to copy the data to a
normal (NON MSG) file and then check the EOF of this file.
