Can someone please tell me what asociate.pub.sys is supposed to do?

I ran IOCONFIG to change the ldev associated with a popular class whose
printer 'went away'; IOCONFIG complained and told me to run
asoctbl.pub.sys to recreate aosciate.pub.sys...
