As was mentioned by Tracy, 3rd party backup software should allow you to do
that.

I also believe that you could try that with regular STORE, but you will need
to use labeled tapes.  I seem to recall something about that from many years
ago.

Appending backups on a tape has upsides and downsides.  The upside is of
course saving on tape.  The down side is that is the tape is bad, you will
lose a lot of backups.

You usually see the need for appending backups when you use robotic devices
for the backup.

Is there any option that allows you to append to a backup tape already 

created?  The thought was to store some files and the come back the next 

day and add to that store tape.
