This message is addressed to all those who will advise entering
students in the next few weeks. As many of you know, History 103,
104, and 105 are a popular option to satisfy the Cultures &
Civilization requirement in our general education program. Currently,
all 17 sections of 103 and 104 are full. But there are five sections
of History 105 which are still open. The catalogue states that a
student must have 103 before taking 104 and 103 and 104 before
enrolling in 105. For many reasons, the history department has never
been in a position to enforce those prerequisites and has customarily
waived them. In fact, the prerequisites for the world history courses
do not have the logical imperative that mathematics courses have. One
can understand, e.g., the material in history 105 without having
taken history 103 and 104.
So, if you have a student that needs to enroll in a cultures and
civilization course, please feel free to put them into a 105 section.
However, those students should also be enrolled in a section of
English 121 if they do not already have credit for that course.
