You would have to be careful with the MPEX method as this is a message
file and, if the file was NOT empty, then MPEX might delete the data in
the message file. However, I suspect the XLTRIM option is safe, as it
only deals with the unused segments..
If the file in question is frequently used, you might be better to
leave the file alone - you have to question how long it takes MPE to
re-allocate a new segment as the file grows.

If you have MPEX, you can
ALTFILE SQLMSG;XLTRIM
In a program, you can close it with
FCLOSE(filenum, 16, 0);
