Hi Wirt :)
Technically, we have a General of the Army (5 Stars arranged in a
Pentagon (go figure hehe)) slot and rank (Designation: GOA). This is a
O-11 paygrade as I recall, but we all know about my memory!

Note this slot hasn't been filled for some time... tho' there was
rumors milling around (pun very much intended!) that it was offered to
Stormin' Norman (awesome ski run on Mt Hood btw!) during the first Gulf
War ... I never did hear if that was true... Also, I have been told by
some that this position is only filled during times of war if then... but
again haven't been able to find any regs that support that assumption :)

And yep... this is way more than you ever wanted to know about the GOA
:)

Just as a technical note, there are no 5 star generals in the military,
and
there haven't been since the death of Omar Bradley here in El Paso in the
early
1980's. The 5-star rank was created during WWII and hasn't been used
since.

The insurgency in Iraq is a phenomenon of our own creation. OBL didn't
create
it. GWB did. And it will dissipate after we leave, although it may well
morph
into all-out sectarian war afterwards.
