If they enjoy programming for programings sake and developing or 
experimenting with sorting, then YES they do.

If they write programs as part of the attempt to solve some other 
problem, then hopefully NO, they use an existing sort and focus on 
the solution to their own problem.  Of course, a sort is a fairly 
clear cut example for your question.  It would be nice if we could 
re-use the majority of code and build on a pyramid of pre-existing 
work but many things rise to prevent or at least seriously reduce that.
