This comment may be just noise, but

it seems to me, a few years ago (or was it only 1 year) when
I attempted to migrate Postgres on Invent3k, I found it
needed an update to autoconf, and in attempting to migrate autoconf
I found that it wanted to use Perl for some reason -- as well
I think the ./configure progress.

Not that I'm against Perl, mind you. Its just that I can only swim
in small densities of quicksand.

What, why did I mention Perl?
