We used to have the same problem in the past.
Our HP3000 sendmail or our FAX/3000 server [now AventX by STR(TM)] would
send e-mail DIRECTLY to the Internet. Every so often a minor network
configuration change would either disallow either internal e-mails or
external e-mail and we'd run around like chickens with our heads cut off
tweaking these servers to fit the network configuration. This went on
for a few years, every six months or so, something else would happen.
We finally hit upon the answer, we set up our "on-the-side" e-mail
servers (HP3000 and FAX3000) to send e-mail to our main MS-Exchange
server instead. AND we configured our main MS-Exchange server to relay
the e-mails as appropriate.
No more problem.
