The 2002 Japanese Educational Reforms: Importing John Dewey

In 2002 widespread changes occurred in Japan's educational system. The Japanese Ministry of Education characterized these reforms as the most significant since World War II. The initiation of student-centered "integrated studies" constituted a major component of the educational reforms. In this presentation, the background implementation and short-term effects of Japan's recent educational reforms will be discussed.
