I didn't mention it because it doesn't have anything to do with 
requiring students to have laptops. It's too cumbersome to deal with a 
laptop in the field. Usually a GPS unit, like a Trimble GeoXT, is used 
to log location of artifacts and related data. The data is off-loaded 
later to a computer for GIS work. And this can all be done with the GIS 
facilities the university already has!
