The email I sent last week advertising the Center for Economic
Education's Student Essay Contest was issued in error to UTC Raven. It
was intended for students on UTC Scrappy and not to stimulate political
commentary on Raven.
While, I fully respect Drs. Russell, and Garrett's right to their
political and professional views, it appears that their commentary may
not have been completely accurate. First, regarding Dr. Russell's
comment, the essay contest guidelines, referenced in the link provided
in the advertisement, clearly indicate that contestants need not agree
with any given position on the issue, and that their essays will be
judged on the basis of the clarity of the writing, and the quality of
their thinking. Thus they would be free to oppose or support any of the
issues to which Dr. Russell alludes. I should also point out that the
previous winning essay in this contest series conducted by the Probasco
Chair was opposed to both free markets and free trade.
Second, regarding Dr. Garrett's definitional argument, while the use of
the term "free market" may be an idealized concept, many if not most,
economists consider a "free market" economy as an economy where the
market is relatively free, as in an economy over seen by a government
that practices laissez-faire, rather than a statist economic policy. A
government's use of force or intervention in the marketplace is ideally
limited to protecting the market participants from coercion, including
protection of property rights and enforcement of contracts. While
responsible economists try not to use the terms "always and everywhere,"
it should be noted that many economists agree that government regulation
does produce an inferior result in a perfectly competitive market place,
not the opposite. While Dr Garrett is certainly entitled to his own
professional opinion, it should also be noted that it appears to be a
minority opinion at best.

Looks like a slanted approach to the main theme. I don't see room here
for a pro and con approach. Contestants might want work in topics like
the loss of pension benefits, lack of health insurance, excessive
salaries for CEO's, and so forth.
