just a follow-up to yesterday's question...

within the menu file, i had simply been invoking the script -- no
'run', no 'xeq'.

i received a private suggestion to change it to...

         run CI.PUB.SYS;PARM=3;info='adduser_script'

and that solved the stdin problem.       - d
