John,

I am just guessing here.

Have you tried pre-allocating the virtual terminal processes?

nscontrol start;servers=vtserver,min,max

where min = minimum number of vt processes
and   max = maximum number of process (usually max= max number of sessions).

That way the you can eliminate the time it takes to create the vtserver process on the hp.
